Public Access & Real World Skills Programme

Build the Skills for Calmer, More Enjoyable Outings Together

Imagine being able to enjoy a drink at a dog-friendly café, walk through a busy town or browse a garden centre with your dog settled calmly beside you.

For some dogs and owners, these everyday activities can feel difficult.

Your dog may become distracted, pull towards people, struggle to settle or find unfamiliar environments overwhelming.

You may avoid taking them to new places because you are unsure how they will cope.

The Public Access & Real-World Skills Programme provides personalised one-to-one dog training to help you and your dog develop the confidence, communication and practical skills needed for calmer outings.

Training takes place gradually in carefully selected, dog-friendly environments across Horsham, West Sussex and the surrounding areas.

Programme Investment — £395

Your programme includes an initial assessment and four personalised coaching sessions.

A payment plan may be available.

Start with a Real-World Skills Assessment

Could This Programme Be Right for You?

This programme may be suitable if you would like your dog to:

✔ Walk more calmly through towns and other busy environments

✔ Settle beside you in dog-friendly cafés or outdoor seating areas

✔ Visit garden centres and pet-friendly shops

✔ Remain more focused around everyday distractions

✔ Pass people and other dogs calmly

✔ Greet people politely when invited

✔ Wait while you stop to talk

✔ Feel more confident in unfamiliar places

✔ Travel to different environments more comfortably

✔ Develop better impulse control and engagement

✔ Learn practical skills that can be used in everyday life

Your dog does not need to be perfect before beginning.

The programme will start at your dog’s current level and progress at a pace they can manage successfully.

What Could Everyday Progress Look Like?

Your goals may include:

🐾 Walking through a village without constantly pulling

🐾 Settling while you have a coffee

🐾 Waiting calmly while you pay at a counter

🐾 Passing people without jumping up

🐾 Staying connected to you around distractions

🐾 Entering a new place without becoming overwhelmed

🐾 Resting quietly while everyday life continues around them

🐾 Recovering more quickly when something unexpected happens

Every dog and household is different, so we will focus on the situations that matter most to you.

This Is About Partnership, Not Perfection

Real-world training is not about expecting your dog to behave like a robot.

Dogs notice smells, movement, people and other animals. They may sometimes become distracted or need more space.

The aim is to help your dog develop the confidence and skills to cope more successfully while helping you recognise when they need guidance, a break or a change of environment.

We will build reliable behaviours through kindness, clear communication and reward-based training.

Your dog will never be forced to remain in an environment when they are showing that they cannot cope.

What We Can Work On

Your personalised training plan may include:

Loose-Lead Walking

Helping your dog walk more comfortably beside you without constant pulling or frustration.

Focus Around Distractions

Teaching your dog how to reconnect with you when people, dogs, smells or movement are nearby.

Calm Settling

Building the ability to rest on a mat or beside you in dog-friendly public places.

Polite Greetings

Helping your dog keep four paws on the floor and greet people calmly when appropriate.

Waiting and Patience

Developing useful skills for queues, doorways, crossings and moments when you need to stop.

Confidence in New Places

Introducing unfamiliar locations gradually so that your dog can explore without becoming overwhelmed.

Calm Behaviour Around Other Dogs

Helping your dog notice and pass other dogs without needing to greet or interact with them.

Recall and Emergency Skills

Developing reliable responses that can help you manage real-life situations more safely.

Handler Engagement

Strengthening your dog’s ability to check in with you and respond to guidance.

How the Programme Works

Step 1 — Real-World Skills Assessment

We begin with an assessment to discuss:

  • Your current difficulties
  • The places you would like to visit
  • Your dog’s existing training
  • Their confidence in new environments
  • Their response to people, dogs and distractions
  • Your individual goals

The assessment helps us identify the best starting point and create a personalised training plan.

It can also be booked as a standalone service if you are not yet ready to commit to the full programme.

Step 2 — Build the Foundations

Before expecting your dog to cope in a busy environment, we may begin in a quieter location.

We will introduce the foundation skills your dog needs, such as:

  • Checking in with you
  • Loose-lead walking
  • Settling
  • Waiting
  • Moving away from distractions
  • Responding to simple cues
  • Taking breaks

Strong foundations make public-place training safer and more successful.

Step 3 — Four Personalised Coaching Sessions

Across four one-to-one sessions, we will gradually practise your dog’s skills in suitable real-life environments.

Depending on your goals and your dog’s confidence, sessions may take place in:

  • Quiet village locations
  • Parks and public footpaths
  • Town centres
  • Garden centres
  • Pet-friendly shops
  • Dog-friendly cafés
  • Outdoor seating areas
  • Other suitable dog-friendly venues

We will choose environments carefully and increase difficulty gradually.

Step 4 — Practise Between Appointments

You will receive manageable exercises to continue between sessions.

These will be designed around your lifestyle and the places available to you.

Regular, realistic practice is usually more helpful than one long or overwhelming training session.

Step 5 — Review and Continue Progress

We will review what is improving, where your dog still needs support and how to continue developing the skills after the programme.

Individual follow-up sessions can be booked if you would like help with new environments or more advanced goals.

What Is Included?

Your programme includes:

✔ Real-World Skills Assessment

✔ Four personalised one-to-one coaching sessions

✔ An individual training plan

✔ Practical exercises between appointments

✔ Relevant Ravendale guides and worksheets

✔ Progress reviews throughout the programme

✔ Reasonable email support for brief questions

✔ Training in appropriate real-life locations

✔ Ongoing guidance from a qualified dog trainer and Canine Behaviour Practitioner

A personalised assessment of your dog’s current skills, confidence and training needs.

You will receive initial guidance and recommendations for moving forward.

Public Access & Real-World Skills Programme — £395

  • Training plan
  • Supporting resources
  • Between-session guidance

The same support purchased separately would cost £425.

Programme saving: £30, plus the included resources and ongoing support.

Individual Follow-Up Sessions — £75

Available after your assessment or once the programme has finished.

These can be used to practise in a new location, work through a particular challenge or continue developing your dog’s skills.

Is This Suitable for a Reactive or Anxious Dog?

It depends on the dog and the severity of the behaviour.

A dog who becomes mildly distracted or uncertain in new places may be able to begin in a quiet environment and progress gradually.

However, if your dog regularly barks, lunges, growls, panics or cannot recover around people, dogs or unfamiliar environments, behaviour support may need to come first.

Placing a dog into a busy public setting before they are emotionally ready is unlikely to help them.

Your assessment will help us decide whether this programme is suitable or whether a Behaviour Assessment and behaviour support would be a kinder starting point.

Important Information

This programme is designed to develop everyday manners, confidence and training skills in places where pet dogs are welcome.

It is not an assistance-dog qualification, formal public-access certification or guarantee that a dog will be suitable for every public environment.

Access to individual cafés, shops, garden centres and other venues remains at the discretion of the business or venue.

Your dog’s welfare and the comfort and safety of the people and animals around them will always come first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is This Programme Only for Assistance Dogs?

No.

This programme is for pet dog owners who would like calmer, more manageable outings in suitable dog-friendly environments.

It does not train or certify assistance dogs.

Does My Dog Need to Be Well Trained Already?

No.

We will begin at your dog’s current level.

However, dogs need to be able to work safely in the chosen environment. Where significant fear, aggression or reactivity is present, behaviour support may be recommended first.

Will We Train in Real Public Places?

Yes, when your dog is ready.

Sessions take place in carefully selected, dog-friendly environments. We may begin somewhere quiet before gradually introducing busier locations.

Will My Dog Be Expected to Greet Other Dogs?

No.

Calm neutrality is often more useful than greeting every dog.

We can help your dog learn to pass other dogs and remain engaged with you without needing direct interaction.

How Long Will the Programme Take?

The programme includes four coaching sessions, but the overall timescale will depend on your dog’s needs, your goals and how frequently you practise.

Sessions should be spaced to allow time for learning and progress between appointments.

What Happens If My Dog Becomes Overwhelmed?

We will create distance, take a break or move to a quieter environment.

Your dog will not be forced to remain in a situation they cannot cope with.

Learning is more effective when a dog feels safe enough to think.

Can I Book More Sessions?

Yes.

Individual follow-up sessions are available at £75 for existing clients who would like continued support or help in additional locations.

Ready to Enjoy More Adventures Together?

Being able to include your dog in everyday outings can be incredibly rewarding, but it should be enjoyable for both of you.

We will begin by understanding your dog’s current abilities, confidence and individual needs.

From there, we can build the practical skills that help you feel more connected, prepared and confident when exploring the world together.
