Professional Code of Conduct & Ethical Commitment

Ravendale Training and Behaviour Compassion. Understanding. Welfare. Professional Integrity.

Our Commitment

At Ravendale Training and Behaviour, we believe that every dog deserves to be understood, respected and supported as an individual.

Our approach is grounded in compassion, animal welfare, ethical practice and an understanding of the many factors that influence canine behaviour.

We recognise that behaviour does not happen in isolation. A dog's physical health, emotional wellbeing, genetics, environment, learning experiences and relationships can all influence how they respond to the world around them.

Our Professional Code of Conduct outlines the principles and standards we are committed to upholding when working with dogs, their caregivers, fellow professionals and the wider community.

1. Animal Welfare and Wellbeing

The physical and emotional welfare of every dog is central to our work.

We are committed to:

  • Prioritising the welfare, safety and emotional wellbeing of dogs.
  • Recognising dogs as individuals with different needs, experiences and abilities.
  • Respecting canine communication, including signs of discomfort, fear, stress and uncertainty.
  • Avoiding training methods that intentionally rely on pain, fear, intimidation or unnecessary distress.
  • Supporting dogs in ways that promote confidence, emotional security and positive learning experiences.

We believe that understanding the reasons behind behaviour is essential to providing appropriate support.

2. Ethical and Evidence-Informed Practice

We are committed to using humane, ethical and evidence-informed approaches to canine training and behaviour modification.

We recognise that canine behaviour science continues to evolve and that responsible professional practice requires an openness to new knowledge.

We will:

  • Use training and behaviour modification strategies appropriate to the individual dog.
  • Consider the dog's emotional state, environment, physical health and learning history.
  • Avoid applying a single training approach to every dog or situation.
  • Review and adapt training plans according to the dog's welfare, progress and individual needs.
  • Make recommendations based on professional knowledge, practical experience and relevant scientific evidence.

Our focus is not simply on changing behaviour but on understanding and addressing the factors contributing to it.

3. Compassion and Respect for Caregivers

We recognise that living with a dog experiencing behavioural difficulties can sometimes be challenging, emotional and overwhelming.

We are committed to treating every caregiver with compassion, dignity and respect.

We will:

  • Listen without judgement.
  • Recognise individual circumstances, abilities and limitations.
  • Provide clear, practical and realistic guidance.
  • Support caregivers in developing their understanding of canine behaviour.
  • Encourage positive relationships built on trust, communication and mutual understanding.

We believe that supporting the person is an essential part of supporting the dog.

4. Professional Integrity and Honesty

We are committed to conducting our work with honesty, transparency and professionalism.

We will:

  • Represent our qualifications, experience and services accurately.
  • Explain our recommendations clearly.
  • Be realistic about expected progress and potential challenges.
  • Avoid guarantees of behavioural outcomes.
  • Communicate openly about fees, services and professional responsibilities.
  • Acknowledge when an approach requires adjustment or when further support is needed.

Behaviour change is an individual process, and we recognise that progress may not always be linear.

5. Professional Competence and Boundaries

We recognise the importance of working within the boundaries of our professional knowledge, training and experience.

We will:

  • Undertake work appropriate to our competence.
  • Recognise when a case requires additional expertise.
  • Recommend veterinary assessment where pain, illness or other medical factors may be influencing behaviour.
  • Work collaboratively with veterinary professionals and other suitably qualified practitioners when appropriate.
  • Avoid diagnosing medical conditions or recommending changes to prescribed medication outside our professional remit.

We recognise that responsible practice sometimes means seeking additional guidance or referring a case to another professional.

6. Safety and Responsible Behaviour Management

Safety is an essential consideration in all training and behaviour work, particularly where fear, aggression, reactivity or bite histories are involved.

We will:

  • Identify and communicate foreseeable risks.
  • Recommend appropriate safety and management strategies.
  • Consider the welfare and safety of dogs, caregivers, other animals and the public.
  • Avoid placing dogs in situations where they are likely to experience unnecessary distress or be pushed beyond their ability to cope.
  • Review management and training recommendations as circumstances change.

We recognise that effective behaviour support must balance welfare, practical management and safety.

7. Confidentiality and Client Privacy

We respect the privacy and confidentiality of everyone who uses our services.

We are committed to:

  • Handling personal information responsibly and in accordance with applicable data protection legislation.
  • Maintaining appropriate and secure client records.
  • Seeking appropriate consent before publishing identifiable photographs, videos, testimonials or case studies.
  • Sharing client information only where there is a lawful and appropriate reason to do so.

Further information about how personal information is handled can be found in our Privacy Policy.

8. Continuing Professional Development

We recognise that professional learning is an ongoing responsibility.

We are committed to maintaining and developing our knowledge through:

  • Continuing professional development.
  • Relevant education, training and professional learning.
  • Reviewing current research and developments in canine behaviour.
  • Reflecting on practical experience and professional decisions.
  • Remaining open to constructive feedback and new perspectives.

We believe that professional development should be guided by curiosity, humility and a commitment to improving animal welfare.

9. Professional Respect and Collaboration

We believe that compassion and respect should extend beyond the dogs and caregivers we support.

These principles are equally important in our relationships with fellow trainers, behaviour practitioners, veterinary professionals and others working within the animal care industry.

We will:

  • Treat fellow professionals with courtesy and respect.
  • Recognise that professional differences of opinion may occur.
  • Engage in constructive, evidence-informed discussion.
  • Challenge practices that raise legitimate welfare concerns without resorting to personal attacks, harassment or bullying.
  • Avoid publicly misrepresenting another professional's work or statements.
  • Encourage collaboration where it benefits dogs and their caregivers.

We believe that advocating for animal welfare and maintaining professional compassion are not mutually exclusive.

Ethical practice should be reflected not only in how we treat animals but also in how we treat one another.

10. Accountability and Professional Responsibility

We recognise that professional accountability is essential to maintaining trust.

We are committed to:

  • Taking responsibility for our professional decisions and actions.
  • Responding to concerns and complaints fairly and respectfully.
  • Reflecting on our practice and recognising opportunities for improvement.
  • Maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Acting in accordance with relevant legal responsibilities and applicable professional standards.

We recognise that being a responsible professional does not mean claiming to have every answer. It means approaching our work with integrity, openness and a willingness to learn.

Our Philosophy: Seeing the Whole Dog

At Ravendale Training and Behaviour, we believe that behaviour is more than what we see on the surface.

A growl, bark, lunge, withdrawal or other behavioural response may reflect a combination of emotions, experiences, physical needs and environmental influences.

Our responsibility is to look beyond the behaviour itself and consider the dog as a whole.

We aim to support dogs and their caregivers through understanding, education, practical guidance and compassionate behaviour support.

Because every behaviour has a story, and every dog deserves to be understood.

Our Professional Commitment

This Code of Conduct represents the ethical and professional standards we aim to uphold throughout our work.

It complements our Terms and Conditions, Privacy Policy and any applicable professional membership or accreditation requirements.

We are committed to reviewing our professional practices as knowledge, evidence and standards continue to develop.
